Advancing the Professional Practice of Medical Physics
AAPM supports the professional aspects of its Mission by promoting standards for professional training and for clinical practice as well as career support for members engaged in clinical practice and academia. These activities fall under the jurisdiction of the Professional Council in coordination with the Science, Education, and Administrative Councils. They are implemented by committees consisting of volunteer AAPM members and supported by AAPM staff.
AAPM has a Code of Ethics Policy and provides Online Ethics & Professionalism Training Modules. It is active in developing Medical Physics Practice Guidelines in collaboration with other organizations when appropriate.
AAPM supports Accredited Residencies in medical physics as the pathway to professional qualification by supporting CAMPEP, by awarding Grants and Fellowships, and through MP-RAP, which helps match trainees to physics residency programs. AAPM co-sponsors the American Board of Radiology (ABR) and the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) and supports Board Certification of medical physicists as a pre-requisite for becoming a Qualified Medical Physicist.
AAPM provides multiple opportunities for members to obtain continuing education credits and address maintenance of certification requirements (MOC) and to generate reports of CME credits through the CME Gateway. Many self-study opportunities are accessible through the Online Learning Center.
The Meetings Program of AAPM provides a rich set of professional education opportunities in local and national settings and opportunities for informal exchanges of information between members.
The Career Services program helps members seek employment opportunities throughout their career. Other career services include the annual Professional Survey.
The Government Affairs program provides an interface between AAPM and the many agencies of Federal and State government which have impact on the professional practice of medical physics.
