Task Group No. 387 - Consensus Recommendations on reliable development and use of Virtual Imaging Trials (TG387)

ActivitiesThe official charges of this TG include the development of consensus guidelines for collaboration, sharing, and interoperability of the components of the virtual imaging trials (VIT) pipelines. We will also discuss guidelines on verification and validation strategies using test phantoms similar to what are being used for clinical QA  across various modalities (i.e., ACR for CT, etc). The guidelines will include tests that compare simulation runs with “expected” results as well as metrics to measure when comparing simulated data against experimental (real) data.

We envision to accommodate the following charges for specific needs of computational phantoms, imaging simulators, and image analyses in various imaging modalities.
  1. Define of input/output file formats for VIT components. The choices will be based on common acceptability of those formats in the medical imaging community.  This will ensure that VIT components are interoperable and reusable.
  2. Define data storage mechanisms and communication methods, ensuring non-redundant data and inconsistent dependencies.
