HyTEC 2103 - Biological Principles of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) and Stereotactic Radiation Surgery (SRS): Indirect Cell Death (2019)

Category: HyTEC

High-dose stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and stereotactic radiation surgery (SRS) kill tumor cells not only through directly damaging DNA but also by causing vascular damage and increasing tumor hypoxia, thereby inducing indirect/secondary tumor cell death. The large amounts of tumor antigens and various immune factors released as a result of the direct tumor cell death and indirect tumor cell death because of vascular dysfunction after high-dose irradiation elevate anticancer immunity. These results strongly indicate that radiation-induced vascular damage plays an important role in the response of tumors to SBRT and SRS. Many issues need to be further investigated to increase the efficacy of SBRT and SRS.
