Category: Reports

This Report supersedes NCRP Report No. 34, and is concerned with structural shielding design and evaluation for medical installations utilizing x rays and gamma rays of energies up to 10 MeV. The report contains recommendations and technical information as well as a discussion of the various factors which must be considered in the selection of appropriate shielding materials and in the calculation of the barrier thickness. Recent availability of new data used to calculate the shielding requirements has resulted in revision of some of the shielding requirement tables set out in Appendix C. Specific values of the parameters used in the formulation of the tables are explicitly given. The calculational procedures are presented in such a manner as to facilitate their use in deriving customized shielding requirements not to be found in the tables. An adjunct to the report presenting full sized reproductions of the curves for barrier requirements is also an innovation for the NCRP. This report is mainly intended for radiological physicists, radiologists, and regulatory personnel who specialize in radiation protecbon. Sections of the report should be of interest also to architects, hospital administrators, and others who are concerned with the planning of new radiation facilities.
