Multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has experienced an expanding role in the diagnosis and evaluation of prostate cancer. SPIE (the international society for optics and photonics), along with the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), conducted a “grand challenge” on quantitative image analysis methods for the diagnostic classification of clinically significant prostate lesions on MRI images. This challenge, known as PROSTATEx, was held in conjunction with the SPIE Medical Imaging Symposium in February 2017 and had participation from 32 groups that submitted results from 71 methods. A follow-up challenge, the PROSTATEx-2 Challenge, was designed to promote the development of quantitative MRI biomarkers for prostate cancer that correlate with Gleason Grade Grouping. The PROSTATEx-2 Challenge was conducted in the months leading up to the 2017 AAPM Annual Meeting and provided a unique opportunity for participants to compare their algorithms with those of others from academia, industry, and government in a structured, direct way using the same data sets. An overview of the PROSTATEx-2 Challenge will be presented along with presentations from the top-performing participating groups.
Learning Objectives:
1. To understand the role of grand challenges and public image datasets in medical imaging research.
2. To understand the Gleason Grade Grouping (GGG) for the evaluation of prostate lesions on magnetic resonance imaging and the potential for computerized techniques to extract imaging biomarkers that correlate with GGG.
3. To learn about the methods used by the top-performing participants in the PROSTATEx-2 Challenge.
