Since the publication of AAPM Online Report No. 3, “Assessment of Display Performance for Medical Imaging Systems” (TG-18), in 2005, Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) have supplanted Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) displays as the primary image display technology in medicine. Also, the recent introduction of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays has provided additional motivation for the imaging community to revisit the guidelines for the performance and quality assurance evaluation of medical display devices. To address this need, AAPM TG 270: Display Quality Assurance has developed recommendations for the assessment of display quality for flat panel displays including both LCDs and OLED displays used in the acquisition and review of medical images.

The purpose of this session is to familiarize the audience with changes in display technology and introduce the TG 270 performance recommendations.

Learning Objectives:
1. Review current display technologies including LCD and OLED Displays and contrast them with CRT displays.
2. Become familiar with TG-270 recommendations for display classification, performance tests, and criteria including testing tools and methods.
3. Discuss strategies and pitfalls one might encounter when establishing an display quality assurance program.
