Medical Physics has made tremendous practice-changing impact in oncology. One of our primary guiding questions for more than 100 years has been how to improve imaging diagnostics and how to focus radiation dose to the tumor target volume in radiation therapy. But medical physics has a lot more to offer! What exactly the “more” entails depends on the questions we will ask in the future.
AAPM WG FUTURE has organized a two-day workshop on "Provocative Questions for Medical Physics in Oncology" in September 2016. Some of the world’s leading experts in medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, genetics, systems biology, angiogenesis, biophysics, physics, imaging, and medical physics will participate, 18 experts in total, participated in the workshop.
The participants generated a list of 18 Provocative Questions (PQs) focusing on three areas (1) Cancer induction, local progression and metastatic spread, (2) Cancer treatment, and (3) Experiments, clinical trials and clinical practice. In addition, a list of 10 Barriers trying to answer these questions have been identified.
The symposium will present and discuss Provocative Questions, as well as identified Barriers. In addition, next steps of the Provocative Questions initiative will be discussed.
