The field of medical physics is poised at an inflection point in its history where the next 20 years are likely to bring many changes as medicine evolves to become increasingly evidence-based, value-based, and molecular. In addition to potential changes in the science of medical physics, there are also ways in which the practice and profession of medical physics are likely to undergo changes. As a field we can appreciate that these changes bring both challenges and opportunities. This joint symposium, sponsored by the four councils of the AAPM, will explore these issues. In particular, novel areas of science in medical physics will be described as well as professional matters of how medical physicists can deliver unique value in the era of precision medicine. And last, the issue of global outreach will be considered as medical physicists consider how best to deliver the promise of modern medicine in various regions of the world. In conjunction with the Professional Council Symposium and the Education Council Symposium, this joint council event will highlight activities across breadth of medical physics involvement.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand ways in which medicine is changing and the potential impact that may have on scientific research in medical physics in the years ahead.
2. Understand how an expanded view of the role of medical physicists includes skills that are applicable in a wide range of work environments.
3. Understand ways in which medical physics in a global context can be most effectively carried out.
