Purpose: Although CT scans can provide fast and accurate information in diagnosis of different diseases, inappropriate use may result in unnecessary radiation risk. According to the reports of WHO, and other international committees, during the past decade, the contribution of CT scans in human exposure has increased significantly in the world. In Iran no research has been performed about it. The purpose of this study is to perform a comprehensive study about the Computed Tomography images in Fars province, as one of the largest provinces of Iran with an area of 122400 km2.
Methods: In the first phase of this study, the information about population distribution in Fars province, and Shiraz city, its capital was obtained. In the second step, the increase in number of CT units, the increase in the number of CT demands, the most frequent images, the variation of the number of the CT scans during different seasons, age, and sex of the patients were investigated, Especially in Namazi hospital of Shiraz which is an important hospital in south of Iran.
Results: According to the results, the number of CT units have an increase of 150% during the last five years. The number of CT demands has also experienced a very significant increase. In Namazi hospital, more than 6000 patients undergo CT imaging each month. The most frequent images are brain-CT. About 30%, and 25% of the images are obtained of the people more than 60 years old, and the people between 30-50 years old respectively. More than 7% of the images are demanded for child less than 5 years old, which is very significant.
Conclusion: The increase in CT demand shows that if the physicians are not properly aware of the radiation risk, they may make inappropriate choices and demand unjustified images.
