Purpose: In this quantitative study, the ability of dose enhancement of Bismuth oxide nanoparticles (Bi2O3-NPs) using MAGIC-f polymer gel under the internal Iridium-192 and the external Cobalt-60 radiotherapy practices were investigated, and its radiosensitization capability was compared to Gold nanoparticles (GNPs).
Methods: The Bi2O3-NPs and GNPs less than 50 nm in diameter and 0.1 mM concentration were synthesized. To increase the precision of the gel dosimetry a Plexiglas phantom was designed and made, all of the gel filled vials (with and without the nanoparticles) were irradiated with an Ir-192 radioactive source simultaneously. Also, irradiation was carried out with a Co-60 teletherapy unit. Finally, the relaxation rates R2 (1/T2) Changes of the irradiated and non-irradiated gels were measured using a Siemens 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner.
Results: The maximum dose enhancement factors under the internal Iridium-192 radiotherapy were 31% and 16% in the presence of Bi2O3-NPs and GNPs, respectively. Whereas these amounts were reduced to 1% in external radiotherapy by Co-60 photons.
Conclusion: Current research approves the feasibility of GNP-/BiNP-aided radiation therapy via brachytherapy, especially using low-energy sources. Additionally, Bismuth and Gold based nanoparticles, can be used in CT as contrast agents and so they are attractive candidates for multimodal dose enhancement studies. Also, the polymer gel dosimetry can be an appropriate material for verification and estimation of dose enhancements in the presence of nanoparticles.
