Purpose: To study the effect of metallized carbon nanotubes on enhancing the radiation dose in external beam therapy.
Methods: Using a 6x6x6 cm3 cube filled with water, photon beams of 5 different energies (2.5MV, 6MV, 6MV FFF, 10MV, 10MV FFF) were delivered with and without copper filled carbon nanotubes suspended in water. Ion chamber reading was collected 1 cm below the water cube using a farmer chamber. The beams are delivered from a TrueBeam Linac, 100 cm SSD and 10x10cm2 field size.Currently, the dose enhancement effect is studied on yeast cells to analyze the DNA damage when copper filled carbon nanotubes are added to the water medium versus the damage when only water is surrounding the yeast cells.
Results: For all studied photon energies, the ion chamber readings show a dose increase when 0.046 g/L copper filled carbon nanotubes are added to the water medium. The increase is 2.46%, 1.63%, 1.72%, 1.16% and 1.29% for 2.5MV, 6MV, 6MV FFF, 10MV and 10MV FFF energies respectively.
Conclusion: The results show an increase of the radiation dose when metallized carbon nanotubes are added to water versus when the beam is delivered to just water. The effect on DNA damage is being studied currently and the results will be presented at AAPM meeting.
