Purpose: Because of the small size of eye plaques, conventional treatment planning systems (TPS) require special modules, and some do not provide for keyboard entry of seed positions. Seed entry based on CT or planar kV images degrades accuracy. Even if a commercial system is available, a second check using a different TPS should be done. The Eye Plaque Planning System (EPPS) described in this paper was written in MATLAB and can be run independently.

Methods: Our EPPS provides for convenient data input. 3D dose calculations are nearly instantaneous, are shown on the computer display. The 3D dose calculations are based on a published tri-exponential fitting function for calculating the radial dose function. Both 3D dose rendering and 2D planar isodose curve display are available. A formal treatment report is automatically generated which includes all important parameters for treatment and record keeping.

Results: EPPS was tested with 11 previous clinical cases for 6 different plaque sizes (from 10 mm to 20 mm for Amersham 6711 Oncoseed sources. The average error of EPPS is 0.16% and the maximum error is 0.37% when compared with those from AAPM TG-43. If it is compared with Duggan’s bi-exponential radial dose approach, the average error is 0.17% and the maximum error is 2.01%.

Conclusion: EPPS is easy to use for 3D dose calculations and display. The generated treatment plan report provides all details required for treatment approval by the radiation oncologist and for record keeping.
