Purpose: With the increasing focus on improving the quality and safety of care delivered to radiotherapy patients it is challenging to provide appropriate educational materials to a global, multidisciplinary audience working in a wide range of economic environments. The IAEA’s e-learning program on Quality and Safety in Radiotherapy (http://elearning.iaea.org/m2/course/view.php?id=392) has been developed to reduce impediments to accessing high quality, current and practical information in this important area through the application of Web-based learning.

Methods: A comprehensive curriculum encompassing topics, ranging from incident learning through prospective approaches, such as FMEA, to safety culture, has been developed and divided into 12 modules with a short quiz associated with each module. Educational content was transferred to PowerPoint slides and a scripted voice over recorded for each slide. Content was reviewed for accuracy, completeness and clarity both by in-house scientists and selected external reviewers.

Results: The free program, funded by the IAEA, consists of approximately 1200 scripted slides embedded in a convenient navigation system. Approximately 6 hours are required to complete the program. As well as covering many of the key principles of quality improvement and error management, practical suggestions for the radiotherapy professional in the clinic are also provided. Successful completion of the 12 quizzes leads to the award of a Certificate of Completion thus assisting teachers and supervisors in monitoring participation in the program by students and staff when appropriate.

Conclusion: In the first 3 months since the release of the program, and with limited promotion, 751 individuals have registered and 120 have been awarded a Certificate of Completion. A survey conducted in February 2017 of individuals who completed the course (response rate of 40 percent) indicated that 80% of the respondents plan to use the information from the course in their daily work.
