Purpose: The feasibility of an imaging guided technique for the BNCT has been raised through the discovery of emission of 478 keV prompt gamma ray after boron neutron capture reaction (BNCT). However, to acquire the prompt gamma ray image as quickly as possible and effectively during treatment, the optimal detector system and fast image reconstruction system is desirable in the clinic. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the optimal detector material for prompt gamma ray imaging during BNCT using a Monte Carlo simulation.

Methods: Sixteen detector materials were estimated to assess the advantages and drawbacks. Estimation on the sixteen detector materials used for radiation detection was collected from the previous experimental data to build the simulation codes. We investigated the physical and chemical conditions and Gaussian energy broadening function in MCNPX was calculated from energy resolution value of 511 keV and 662 keV. The energy resolution and detection efficiency of each material was investigated.

Results: Prompt gamma ray images during BNCT simulation were acquired using only the detectors that showed good performance in our preliminary data. From the simulation, we could evaluate the majority of detector materials in BNCT. We also could acquire a prompt gamma ray image using the six high ranked detector materials.

Conclusion: This study investigated the optimal detector material for the prompt gamma ray imaging in BNCT. We have provided: 1) the basic performances of sixteen detector materials, 2) the reconstructed prompt gamma ray imaging by using the Monte Carlo simulation. It will be helpful to select the optimum detection material for the prompt gamma ray imaging in the BNCT research.
