MO-AB-708-0 (Monday, July 31, 2017) 7:30 AM - 9:30 AM Room: 708

The goals of this ultrasound hands-on workshop are
1. to demonstrate quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) testing in diagnostic ultrasound and to provide updates in ACR ultrasound accreditation requirements;
2. to show advancements in high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). HIFU is a therapeutic modality that focuses a beam of ultrasound energy into a small volume at specific target locations within the body to cause localized high temperatures and produce a well-defined region of necrosis.

The first half of this workshop will include two presentations, one reviewing diagnostic ultrasound QA/QC, and the second presenting an overview of HIFU technology and its great potential for tumor ablation and targeted drug delivery. The second half of this workshop will include: 1) live demonstrations of basic diagnostic ultrasound QC tests. An array of phantoms, scanners and ultrasound test equipment will be available for attendees to learn diagnostic ultrasound QC in a hands-on environment, with demonstrations by medical physicists; 2) examples of therapeutic ultrasound equipment. An assortment of HIFU equipment, including applicators and control modules will be made available, with demonstrations and on-site instructors at separate stations.

The targeted attendees are medical physicists and other medical professionals in diagnostic imaging and radiation oncology with interest in diagnostic ultrasound QC and/or in HIFU.

Learning Objectives:
1. Gain familiarity with common elements of a QA/QC program for diagnostic ultrasound imaging and ACR ultrasound accreditation requirements
2. Identify QC tools, phantoms, and software for testing diagnostic ultrasound systems and learn how to use these devices on today’s scanners
3. Get an overview of state-of-the art HIFU technologies
4. Learn ultrasound physics and safety for HIFU applications through live demonstrations.
