Medical Imaging is playing an increasingly important role in both diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy clinical trials, especially in the assessment of treatment response. One path for establishing the role of imaging in the staging and treatment of cancer is through clinical trials. There is a strong interest in the imaging research community in development of functional and quantitative imaging biomarkers as surrogates for diagnostics and early endpoints of response to oncologic treatments. However, there may be a multitude of complexities in application of imaging in clinical trials. Medical physicists with expertise in physics and quality assurance in imaging and radiation therapy modalities provide an essential role in clinical trial teams. They can help ensure the integrity of imaging data acquisition and analysis in clinical trials. Therefore, Medical Physicists are being asked to play an increasingly important role in both the design and execution of imaging in the clinical trials context, again both in Diagnostic Imaging and in Radiation Therapy treatment trials. This session provides an overview of imaging in oncology clinical trials as well as presentations on the basics of imaging modalities (MR, PET-CT, and CT) with a special emphasis on the use of these modalities in clinical trials.

1. Understand the impact of imaging in diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy clinical trials, especially in the assessment of treatment response.
2. Understand the basics of MR imaging in the context of clinical trials
3. Understand the basics of PET-CT imaging in the context of clinical trials
4. Understand the basics of CT imaging in the context of clinical trials
