The prestigious Gray Medal was established by the International Commission on Radiation Units & Measurements (ICRU) in 1967. This medal is awarded for outstanding contributions in scientific fields of interest to the ICRU, and it honors the late Louis Harold Gray, former member and Vice-Chairman of the ICRU and eminent medical physicist and radiobiologist. The medal is awarded with a frequency determined by the ICRU and is usually awarded in rotation, to recipients in the fields of Radiation Oncology, Medical Imaging, and Basic Science. The presentation of the medal occurs at an appropriate international congress or symposium where the recipient is invited to give a scientific lecture.
The ICRU has selected Prof. Charles A. Mistretta from the University of Wisconsin-Madison as the 18th recipient of the Gray Medal for his work developing digital subtraction angiography (DSA). During this award presentation session, three eminent scientists and clinicians have been invited to teach the science and clinical utility of conventional x-ray DSA, its extension from x-ray to magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and the most recent advances in four-dimensional x-ray DSA. Prof. Mistretta will cover the technical developments in x-ray DSA, MRI TRICKS, and 4D-DSA. Prof. Charles Strother will focus on how DSA revolutionized interventional neuroradiology and how 4D DSA is being gradually adopted into interventional procedures to facilitate clinical diagnosis and interventions. Prof. Thomas M. Grist will focus on how the development of time-resolved MRA changed the clinical assessment of vascular disease in diagnostic radiology.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the development of x-ray DSA, 4D DSA, and MRI TRICKS technologies;
2. Understand how x-ray DSA and 4D DSA are utilized by interventional radiologist to guide their interventional procedures;
3. Understand how time-resolved MRA techniques are used by diagnostic radiologists to improve clinical care.
