Scientific Program Schedule
Day 1, Sunday, June 22, 2003

Time Topic & Faculty Objectives
8:00 – 8:45 AM Historical perspective on IMRT
Steve Webb
PDF Presentation (931 KB)
Provide the background to the development of IMRT and identify the factors, which have been important in establishing this method of planning and delivery. The development of IMRT will also be discussed in historical context and specifically the link to developments in inverse planning will be made.
8:45 – 9:30 AM Mathematics of Optimization
Yair Censor
PDF Presentation (295 KB)
Review the mathematical techniques used in planning optimization. Discuss linear vs. nonlinear, continuous vs. integer, deterministic vs. stochastic, and single vs. multi-objective models. Discuss the use of parameters, decision variables, constraints and objectives in optimization.
9:30 – 10:00 AM DISCUSSION
10:00 – 10:15 AM BREAK
10:15 – 11:00 AM Physical Optimization
Thomas Bortfeld
PDF Presentation (3.55 MB)
Review IMRT optimization algorithms: principles, potential, and limitations. Discuss inverse planning approach vs. forward calculation. Discuss physical objective functions used in IMRT planning process.
11:00 – 11:45 AM Biological Optimization of IMRT
Ellen Yorke
PDF Presentation (230 KB)
Discuss the principles of biological optimization. Review the current status of TCP and NTCP data.
11:45 – 12:15 PM DISCUSSION
12:15 – 2:00 PM LUNCH
2:00 – 2:45 PM Aperture-based Optimization
Cedric Yu and
Dave Shepard
PDF Presentation (1.64 MB)
Review the applications of forward planning optimization techniques in clinical cases. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of forward planning over the inverse planning optimization. Provide clinical examples.
2:45 – 3:30 PM Medical Imagingfor IMRT Planning
Chuck Peliazzari
PDF Presentation (1.88 MB)
Provide an overview of the anatomical and functional imaging used in IMRT planning. Describe the methods of image registration and segmentation. Discuss the applications of 3D visualization in IMRT.
3:30 – 4:00 PM DISCUSSION
4:00 – 4:15 PM BREAK
4:15 – 5:15 PM Target and Critical Structure Definitions, Dose Prescription and Reporting for IMRT
James Balter
PDF Presentation (1.44 MB)
Review the ICRU 50&62 recommendations and its application in IMRT. Discuss the rationale for internal margin and set up margin. Describe the common strategies used in the selection of appropriate margins.

Evening Discussion Session (Beer and Pretzels) 7:30- 9:30 PM

"What is different about IMRT?": Mark Langer; Moderator
Panel: Steve Webb, Tom Bortfeld, Yair Censor, Dick Fraass, and Marcel van Herk
PDF Presentation (212 KB)

The moderator for the session, an expert on IMRT will provide his/her perspective on this issue and open the floor for discussion. A panel of experts with expertise in different aspects of IMRT planning and delivery will assist the moderator in answering the questions from the floor.
