AAPM supports its mission to advance the science, education and professional practice of medical physics by fostering the education of medical physicists, physicians and other professionals. This Website acts as the portal to all AAPM educational programs and to the diverse activities of this Association. RSS feeds from the home page provide notification of new topical postings.
Medical Physics Academic Programs
Degree granting academic programs, especially at the graduate level, are offered by many institutions. The Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) is the organization that accredits programs that meet specific standards. Graduation from a CAMPEP accredited program might be a requirement for application for some board certifications. These programs are listed in the directory of CAMPEP Accredited Graduate Programs in Medical Physics. AAPM promotes high quality educational programs at the Graduate and Postgraduate levels in collaboration with other organizations, and awards Training Grants and Fellowships.
Medical Physics Residency Programs
There is growing emphasis within the medical community on the professional training and qualification of medical physicists. AAPM supports Residencies in medical physics as the pathway to professional qualification by supporting CAMPEP, by awarding Grants and Fellowships, and through MP-RAP.
The Medical Physics Matching Program (the "MedPhys Match")
The MedPhys Match helps match trainees with programs, is sponsored and supervised by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), and the Society of Directors of Academic Medical Physics Programs (SDAMPP). The MedPhys Match is administered on behalf of AAPM and SDAMPP by National Matching Services Inc.
Medical Physics Board Certification
AAPM co-sponsors the American Board of Radiology (ABR) and the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) and supports Board Certification of medical physicists as a pre-requisite for becoming a Qualified Medical Physicist.
A major role of AAPM with respect to board certification is providing resources for members to obtain continuing education credits and address maintenance of certification requirements (MOC) through CAMPEP and to view, print or generate reports of CME credits through the CME Gateway. AAPM also provides Online Ethics & Professionalism Training Modules.
Medical Physics Continuing Education
AAPM is a major resource for continuing education and professional development. Most of the continuing education provided by AAPM is CAMPEP approved and are of special value to medical physicists to meet various certification requirements.
The Meetings Program of AAPM provides a rich set of educational opportunities in local, national and international settings. Many of the presentations made at AAPM meetings are recorded and made available to members. Many self-study opportunities are accessible through the Virtual Library and the Online Learning Center and may qualify for credits through CAMPEP.
The Publications Program supports the varied educational needs of the medical physics community, and provides opportunities for self-study that qualify for credits through CAMPEP.
For Students interested in a Career in Medical Physics
AAPM provides Various Public Education and Student programs to reach out to the public, to other educators and professionals and to potential recruits to foster a better understanding of the role of medical physics in health-care and the nature a career as a medical physicist.
International Educational Programs
The International Program of AAPM supports a variety of International Educational Programs and other outreach to the Developing Nations.
Resources for Medical Physics Educators
Providing education and training for Radiologists, Radiation Oncologists and other professionals who perform radiological procedures in addition medical physics students and residents is a major professional activity for the medical physicist educators. AAPM provides a variety of resources to support and enhance the education process.
The Educators Resource Guide is the directory and gateway to a variety of resources and materials that can be used by educators.
Specific resources to support the education for Radiology Residents are AAPM endorsed course curricula and other resources including the RSNA/AAPM Online Physics Modules.
The Medical Physicist as Educator WiKi provides multiple resources and links relating to the educational process and innovations in medical physics education.
The AAPM Speaker Index is an effort to provide information for those planning meetings or developing requests for proposal. The original intent was to be able to find diverse speakers for regional chapter meetings, but can be used to find potential speakers for other events as well. The index is open to all members of the AAPM to self-identify their information to be a part of the list.
