Charge | To consider evolving areas of biomedical science where it will be strategic for AAPM to have a role in the next decade, and to recommend investments AAPM can make to facilitate our success in those arenas. In particular, the committee should do the following: - Consider how the application of physics to medicine might change over the coming 10-20 years. Identify areas of biomedical science that will most likely be impacted by these applications.
- Identify key areas of biomedical science where it would be valuable for AAPM to have a prominent leadership role over the next 10-20 years.
- Evaluate opportunities and benefits to AAPM, and the field of medical physics more broadly, from expanding into these new areas of science or practice.
- Evaluate risks to AAPM, and the field of medical physics more broadly, if the field does not adapt to these evolving directions in medicine.
- Make recommendations for how AAPM can facilitate our moving into these new areas. These recommendations may include
- Financial investments from AAPM reserves to jumpstart new initiatives
- Investment in seed grants to help members establish themselves in these new areas
- Formation of exploratory committees in new areas of science
- Making connections with other scientific organizations to find areas of mutual interest and synergy, especially in areas not traditionally associated with medical physics
- Potential grant applications, similar to the recent MIDRC initiative
- Any new committee, TG, or WG structures needed to promote this work
- Any anticipated requirements to educate AAPM membership about the importance and opportunities of these new initiatives
- Other areas, as suggested by the committee
