New Members of the AAPM are sometimes overwhelmed by the size and complexity of the Association and may be discouraged from taking full advantage of its benefits or from participating in some activities. The AAPM recognizes this, and wishes to make the Association more accessible to new members. At the New Member Symposium, you will meet the AAPM President, the Executive Director and a number of senior officers. The Symposium will focus on those services the organization provides that are especially helpful for new members, and on how new members can become active in the organization. Informal discussions with AAPM leadership and staff are part of the symposium. Refreshments will be served.

Forces for Change in Medical Physics Education: A Time of Crisis or Opportunity?
The newly formed Society of Directors of Academic Medical Physics Programs (SDAMPP) and the AAPM invite both members and students to join in open discussion of the future of medical physics education. Changes in ABR board eligibility requirements are on the horizon, including the need for students to have graduated from a CAMPEP-approved graduate program starting in 2012 and the need to have taken an approved residency starting in 2014. These deadlines can cause anxiety for students and training programs alike. How will the profession rise to meet these challenges? This session will consider many facets of this question. For example, how can educational programs obtain the funding to provide a steady stream of qualified physicists? Will the profession be improved by creation of a professional Doctor of Medical Physics degree? How will lack of research training impact on medical physicists’ ability to improve physical and practice environments in radiology and radiation oncology? Education and training are the tools necessary to achieve improved clinical practice and research, but abrupt changes in the training landscape can present challenges to existing programs. Come hear how some educational programs are facing these challenges, and contribute your own thoughts on these important matters.
The SDAMPP is a new organization dedicated to enhancing medical physics education worldwide by providing a forum for discussion among educational program leaders. It is holding its first Annual Meeting this year in conjunction with the AAPM. Any interested AAPM members or students are invited to attend the SDAMPP Annual Meeting on Sunday from 1:30-3:30 in Room 350. There will be talks by educational leaders and a panel discussion, as well as time for questions and discussion from the audience.
In addition, individuals interested in becoming members of SDAMPP should attend the SDAMPP Business Meeting immediately following, at 3:30-4:30 pm Sunday in Room 350.
