Within the ever dynamic field of healthcare, cancer treatment centers are continually opened or taken over by larger entities. While there are a large number of AAPM TG reports with recommendations for the commissioning and establishment of Quality Management Programs (QMPs) of specific systems (linacs, CT simulators, HDR units and other radiation producing devices), there is no comprehensive document that addresses the overall responsibility of opening of a new Radiation Oncology Center as a whole. The goal of this session is to fill that gap. The session will cover the process of opening of a cancer center and provide a road map to understanding the clinical needs to be fulfilled, the role of project management and key players, facility design, equipment selection, and staffing as well as regulatory aspects. Opening a cancer center incorporates the fundamentals of clinical physics!

1. Understand Project Management and the roles of key players in the enterprise
2. Learn how to determine important steps in the process, timelines, staffing and the regulatory aspects of opening a center
3. Understand the reality of the responsibilities of the clinical physicist’s leadership role in this type of project.
