Radiation safety and understand the shielding in a radiation therapy clinic falls under the clinical medical physicist expertise. However, beyond what was learned in didactic schooling and studies, shielding has remained skill that is perfected by hands-on experience. In this session we look beyond the basic equations and at the practical implications that advances in treatment delivery via new technologies such as Cyberknife, Tomotherapy, MR/Linacs and GammaPods have made in modern day shielding design.
The shielding for a vault is most often at once-in-a-blue moon occurance: once when the vault is newly designed and again when the equipment in it is being replaced. With the modern day linac what does it mean to commission a linac given the mechanical consistency as well as accurate vendor reference data sets available? Can the process be changed from what was done in past years to reflect the high precision devices that are being installed in vaults now? How does the commissioning of a machine today reflect the advances in technology and changes in treatment paradigms?
Learning Objectives:
1. Learn the shielding design techniques for newer modalities in radiation therapy equipment such as Cyberknife, Tomotherapy, MR/Linacs and GammaPods.
2. Learn how commissioning has changed through the years and what the current standards of measurements are.
