The oxygenation status of tissue is a critical factor in cellular metabolism and many other tissue properties. Hypoxia, a reduced state of oxygenation, is known to have a significant impact on radiation sensitivity and the metabolism of many drugs. In this symposium, our speakers will begin by overviewing the biology of hypoxia and some general questions that imaging may help us answer. This will be followed by a discussion of ways to estimate hypoxia using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Finally, several uses of hypoxia imaging in developing cancer treatment paradigms will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:
1. The general role of oxygen in cellular biology and the consequence of reduced oxygen on several cellular metabolic pathways.
2. Understand the principles of how hypoxia can be measured in vivo using MRI.
3. Learn how hypoxia imaging is being use in the development of treatment pathways.
