AAPM Online Learning Center

Members have the opportunity to earn CAMPEP approved Medical Physics Continuing Education Credit (MPCEC) for successfully passing quizzes associated with informational sources such as journal articles, AAPM Virtual Library presentations, task group reports, and other publications.

Many AAPM members now require Maintenance of Certification (MOC) as defined by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). One component of MOC is the completion of Self-Assessment Module (SAM). SAMs offerings can be found in the online learning center. 2010,2011 and 2012 SAMs content is now available.

To maintain certification, ABR requires candidates to take an average of 2 SAMs per year, with no limit on the maximum number per year. The online SAMs carry CAMPEP MPCEC/Category 1 CME credit as well as SAM credit

The Online Continuing Education Program runs on a calendar year. The annual fee is $65. Choose this option on your AAPM dues invoice or pay online.

Sequestration Could Take Toll On Cancer Research

Cancer research advocates and lawmakers say the sequestration’s effects on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) could have a devastating impact on the development of new cancer treatments, with one stakeholder saying the mandatory across-the-board cuts could also impact FDA’s oncology drug review times -- an area where the agency has traditionally been fast in reviewing products... PCORI and Disease-Specific CER Standards

The Patient Centered Research and Outcomes Institute (PCORI) is considering partnering with the Center for Medical Technology Policy (CMTP) on disease-specific standards for conducting comparative effectiveness research (CER). PCORI restricted its own research agenda to work on methodological standards for general guidelines, and CMTP is working on topic-specific CER, such as the report it issued recently on chronic wound therapy. CMTP hopes to at least align its work with PCORI’s priorities and methods standards.

The health reform law created PCORI as a non-profit organization that funds “comparative clinical effectiveness” research that compares options for treating diseases. However, PCORI decided to stick to research on general guidelines, at least at first, saying in a draft research agenda that it was “not specifying or prioritizing any particular condition or disease for research, although we may do so in the future.”

Congress

Bipartisan lawmakers urge CMS to scrap cancer pay cuts

Large bipartisan groups of lawmakers are urging CMS to reconsider Medicare pay cuts to cancer radiation services following a lobby day by cancer doctors and patients. More than 100 lawmakers in the House signed a letter asking CMS to re-evaluate the oncologists’ practice expenses, and 28 senators said CMS should include all components of the practice expense relative value units that determine payment intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)... CMS Suspends Implementation of Bundled Pay Initiative

CMS has suspended implementation of the first model of its bundled payment initiative, which is designed to transition hospitals and other providers away from fee-for-service reimbursements to lump-sum payments that are centered around episodes-of-care. Stakeholders wonder if the decision has any implications for the future of the CMS bundling initiative... [see full article]
