Policy text
The benefit of medical imaging in saving lives and improving patient treatment is well established. Thus, medical imaging should be used when clinically appropriate. It should also be performed using the lowest radiation dose necessary to accomplish the clinical task. However, arbitrary reduction of patient radiation dose without regard to degraded image quality is potentially harmful to the patient and contrary to providing proper medical care. Qualified medical physicists and imaging physicians should work together to develop optimized protocols that appropriately balance the anticipated medical benefits from a diagnostic quality exam with the potential risk from ionizing radiation.
