PET technology moving from the conventional photomultiplier tube (PMT) detector based to the new generation solid state light sensor detector based is a technology leap. This symposium aims to introduce and describe the emerging and new generation PET instrumentations and technologies across manufactures, focusing on solid state PET detector designs, system characteristics, and clinical practices as well as future advanced Time-of-Flight (TOF) PET technologies. Physicists, physicians and technologists wishing to better understand future PET systems and novel PET technologies are expected to attend this symposium.

Timothy Turkington - Basics of PET Physics and Instrumentation
The lecture will describe the basics of PET physics and instrumentation, focusing on PMT PET detector design and principles, coincidence detection and electronic collimation, scattered/random/true events, anger logic positioning decoding, OS-EM PET reconstruction, system performance characteristics (spatial resolution, sensitivity, timing resolution and energy resolution, etc), TOF PET, as well as any potential limitations of current PET technology.

Jun Zhang - New Generation Solid State Digital Photon Counting PET
The lecture will describe the basics of solid state digital photon counting PET instrumentation and technology, focusing on Philips Vereos DPC PET detector design and principles, system performance characteristics of NEMA testing compared to current Philips PMT PET instrumentations, significant improvements (e.g., timing resolution) and new features, new initiatives and opportunities for clinical practices, as well as any potential limitations.

Osama Mawlawi - New Generation Solid State LightBurst PET
The lecture will describe the basics of solid state LightBurst PET instrumentation and technology, focusing on GE Discovery MI PET detector design and principles, system performance characteristics of NEMA testing compared to current GE PMT PET instrumentations, significant improvements (e.g., sensitivity) and new features, new initiatives and opportunities for clinical practices, as well as any potential limitations.

Joel Karp - Future Prospects of Time-of-Flight PET: Scintillator, Detector and Depth-of- interaction (DOI) Technologies
The lecture will describe advancement of TOF PET instrumentations and technologies from future prospects, focusing on novel scintillators, novel photo-sensor detectors, DOI encoding technologies, novel image generation methodologies as well as such extended benefits of TOF PET and the potential opportunities and contributions to clinical practice.
