TU-FG-708-0 (Tuesday, August 1, 2017) 1:45 PM - 3:45 PM Room: 708

Therapeutic ultrasound covers a broad range of exposure conditions ranging from pulsed delivery of ultrasound (high and low intensity) that exploit mechanical interactions, to continuous exposures that generate tissue heating. Within this parameter space, a variety of function and anatomical bio-effects can be generated in the body. This session will review emerging applications for therapeutic ultrasound and current methods for image-guidance and control of treatments. Functional modification of tissue can occur in the brain with respect to modulating brain circuits and recent pre-clinical work in this area will be reviewed. In the field of oncology, studies aimed at enhancing the immune response to tumors with ultrasound will be reviewed and presented. Using extremely short and high power pulses, rapid and precise tissue ablation can be achieved, and the potential clinical applications and recent pre-clinical data will be presented. Finally, the current role and future potential for using MRI in combination with therapeutic ultrasound as a method for non-invasive tissue ablation will be presented. The session will provide a broad understanding of ongoing research efforts in the area of therapeutic ultrasound and their current status.

Learning Objectives:
1. Describe novel applications of therapeutic ultrasound exposures in neuro-modulation, oncology, and tissue ablation
2. Describe the different bio-effects in tissue that can be exploited using ultrasound exposures
3. Describe the importance of image-guidance in monitoring and assessing ultrasound treatments
4. Describe the clinical status of novel therapeutic ultrasound applications and the technical challenges that are required to be overcome.
