In the medical physics profession, individual physicists should have the autonomy to perform their duties based on their professional judgement within the confines of licensure and regulation. However, this inevitably leads to a variety of opinions regarding what constitutes good clinical practice. Additionally, the multiplicity of technologies in our field means that not all physicists have the same specific skills and knowledge. Finally, organizations outside of our field, including accreditors and regulators, have a difficult time understanding the inherent expectations and requirements for performing duties within the physics profession.

The AAPM initiated the Medical Physics Practice Guideline effort to support practicing clinical physicists. The Practice Guidelines achieve this by more clearly articulating the scope of practice and expectations for quality for the medical physics community. This effort is no longer in its infancy and is on its way to maturity. Here we present a) the rationale and benefit of Practice Guidelines and related documents, b) the history, vision, and philosophy that initiated the AAPM’s effort, c) the methodology of identifying, writing, and publishing a Practice Guideline, and d) an experience with implementing a Practice Guideline into a clinical environment.

Learning Objectives:
1. History and state of the AAPM Practice Guideline effort
2. Intent and purpose of Practice Guidelines
3. Practice Guideline identification, development and publication
4. Practical knowledge on implementation of Practice Guidelines
