Clinical Trials in Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Therapy often involve non-standard of care protocols, which may require the expertise of a medical physicist at many different stages as well as at many different levels ranging from being a member of the trial team all the way to being PI of the trial. Thus, the medical physicist may be involved in some of the fundamental decisions being made during the trial design stages such as: choice of imaging or treatment modality (e.g. PET-CT vs. PET-MR, etc.); the design of the imaging or treatment protocol itself; whether sites should be credentialed by a central review team or allowed to develop their own procedures. Medical Physicists may also be involved during the actual execution of the trial in terms of ongoing QA procedures to ensure the original protocol is being adhered to, etc. These activities have to be designed and executed with the understanding that resources for sites participating in the trial may be limited. This session provides an overview of the roles and tasks of medical physicists in clinical trials and then provides some specific examples drawing from both Radiation Therapy treatment trials as well as Diagnostic Imaging trials.
