Design has a profound impact on the safety and quality of the delivery of care, and ultimately, its cost-effectiveness. Design includes not only devices and software but also workflow and the interactions of people both with devices and with each other. The purpose of this symposium is to explore these concepts in the context of radiology and radiation oncology, drawing from over thirty years of research mostly outside the field of oncology. We will present case studies of error in which design was implicated as a contributing factor. We will explore aspects of human performance and cognitive science and examine how they inform design. We will discuss workflow design and the need for purposeful planning as a complement to organic evolution. An awareness and understanding of design concepts in radiology and radiation oncology will help promote the safety and quality of care.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand key concepts in human performance and cognitive science and how they affect design.
2. Appreciate design pitfalls relevant to radiation oncology and radiology.
3. Recognize the need to purposefully design workflow and interactions.

Funding Support, Disclosures, and Conflict of Interest: C. Negrut is an employee of Accuray Inc.
