WE-DE-FS1-0 (Wednesday, August 2, 2017) 10:15 AM - 12:15 PM Room: Four Seasons 1

Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART) is a state-of-the-art approach that uses a treatment feedback process to account for patient-specific anatomic and/or biological changes, thus, delivering highly individualized radiation therapy for cancer patients. A key to ART is the early detection of anatomic and/or biological changes for plan adaptation. These biological changes include the tumor and/or normal tissue responses to radiation therapy as assessed using multimodality quantitative imaging before, during and after the delivery of radiation therapy. The technologies for both quantitative imaging and plan adaptation have advanced significantly in the last few years and are beginning to move into the clinic. Particularly, with the advance in radiomics and availability of integrated MRI and delivery machines, the plan adaptation based on treatment response has drawn greater attention in the radiation oncology community. The purpose of this session is to update physicists with the recent technological advances and clinical outcome of selected clinical trials on ART based on quantitative imaging and to discuss potentials and obstacles of this rapidly developing area. A panel of physicists and radiation oncologist will present and discuss the relevant issues including (1) quantitative imaging for treatment response assessment, (2) clinical experience and outcome of PET based ART for lung cancer, (3) clinical experience of functional MRI guided RT for prostate cancer (FLAME Trial), and (4) quantitative CT/MRI for ART of pancreas and head & neck.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understanding rationale, indications, promise and challenges of ART based on quantitative imaging
2. Reviewing recent advances of quantitative imaging and related plan adaptation technologies
3. Discussing potentials and obstacles for using quantitative imaging for ART
