Second MPPG Issued

On January 6th, the second Medical Physics Practice Guideline (MPPG) titled: AAPM Medical Physics Practice Guideline 2.a: Commissioning and quality assurance of X-ray–based image-guided radiotherapy systems was published in the Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics (JACMP); Volume 15, Number 1 (2014).

The goal of the MPPGs is to help advance the practice of clinical medical physics in the United States by defining the minimum level of medical physics support that the AAPM would consider to be prudent in all practice settings for specific clinical services. Existing medical physics practice guidelines will be reviewed for the purpose of revision or renewal, as appropriate, on their fifth anniversary or sooner.

Each medical physics practice guideline has undergone a thorough consensus process in which it has been subjected to extensive review, and requires the approval of the AAPM’s Professional Council. The medical physics practice guidelines recognize that the safe and effective use of radiation for diagnostic and therapeutic applications requires specific training, appropriate processes and sufficient resources, as described in each document. Further information is available on the AAPM website.
